Frequently Asked Questions
Even with the passage of time, many women still retain their youthful energy and enthusiasm, but post-menopausal changes can affect a woman’s quality of life in unexpected ways. Now, there is a gentle laser therapy that can help millions of women who are silently suffering.
As women pass through menopause, the estrogen levels fall that cause many changes, some notable, and some not in their body. In the vagina, the skin thins causing many changes such as dryness, itching, painful intercourse, change in odor, and bladder changes.
The MonaLisa Touch
What is the MonaLisa Touch?
The MonaLisa Touch is a remarkably gentle laser therapy that brings controlled energy to the wall tissue of the vagina. The purpose of this innovative approach is to restore gynaecological health by regenerating collagen, elastin, and vascularization. The MonaLisa Touch was initially available outside the US, treating over 15,000 patients around the world.
How does it work?
Using gentle laser energy delivered straight to the vaginal tissues, the MonaLisa Touch creates small pulses that also encourage a change in the deeper tissue. A side-firing probe is inserted deep into the vaginal canal. The two-part pulse created targets both the deep (lamina propria) tissue as well as the surface (epthelial) tissue to ensure the promotion of vaginal mucosal revitalization. The result is an amazing change of the vaginal tissue not unlike to how it used to be before menopause.
What clinical trials have been conducted on the MonaLisa Touch?
Dr. Mickey Karram, who is the Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH and Dr. Eric Sokol, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center conducted a multistudy on the MonaLisa Touch.
The trial had assessed how the use of CO3 fractional laser therapy affects 30 women suffering from gynecological health issues because of natural or induced menopause. The trial showed that all of the patients treated with the MonaLisa Touch manifested these results:
- Positive and immediate results
- Highly statistically significant reported improvement in systems right after the first treatment
- Continuous and escalated progress with every subsequent treatment
Women in the trial were naturally menopausal or experiencing induced menopausal resulting from hysterectomy or drug-induced suppression of ovarian function due to chemotherapy, anticancer drugs like Tamoxifen, and radiations.
A study was also done by Dr. Stefano Salvatore, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, assessing the feasibility of fractional CO2 laser in treating 50 women suffering gynecological health changes.
42 of the patients (84%) showed significant improvement both in their physical and mental quality of life scores over baseline. They were also satisfied with the treatment given as their gynecologic symptoms were improved significantly.
Where can I have this done?
Dr. Weisberg is one of the first physicians in Canada to provide this life-altering procedure for women and will determine if MonaLisa is right for you.
Does the procedure hurt?
Because the procedure does not require the administration of anesthesia, some patients may experience a little discomfort when the probe is inserted for the first time. However, the treatment itself is not painful! What patients usually report is how it feels like a gentle vibration.
Why would I consider Geneveve?
If you are experiencing the following, you may want to talk to Dr. Weisberg about Geneveve:
- Do tampons feel like they are slipping out?
- Does your vagina feel loose during intimacy?
- Have you noticed a decrease in physical sensation during intimacy?
- Is the fit with your partner not as snug as in the past?
- Do you sometimes feel air flowing from your vagina?
- Are you suffering from incontinence or leaking of urine?
How does this help my vaginal laxity (looseness)?
Vaginal laxity not only results in decreased sensation and enjoyment with intercourse, but can also lead to incontinence or leaking of urine with movements such as jumping or skipping and actions such as laughing, coughing or sneezing. Because Geneveve is specifically designed for vaginal laxity, it works at the cellular level to rebuild and restore collagen, without harming the vaginal opening, while tightening and renewing the vagina.
What is the Geneveve treatment like?
Geneveve is a comfortable, 30-minute treatment that does not require local or topical anesthesia or analgesics. Geneveve is performed by a trained healthcare professional in an outpatient setting. Geneveve uses gentle, deep heating and surface cooling to stimulate the body’s natural collagen formation process, which revitalizes and tightens tissue just inside the vaginal opening. Because the surface of the vaginal walls is not injured, patients typically return to normal activities immediately.
What are the benefits of the Geneveve treatment?
- At 12 months, improved and sustained tightening was shown in 90% of the women.
- Significant improvement in sexual satisfaction was also indicated through 12-month follow-up.
Is the Geneveve treatment safe?
Yes. It is safe and effective!
Who can have the Geneveve treatment?
Dr. Weisberg will determine if Geneveve is right for you based on your medical history. However, you should NOT consider Geneveve if you have an implantable pacemaker or an Automatic Implantable Cardioverter/Defibrillator (AICD) or any other implantable metal device.
