Vaginal laxity is one of the most common yet overlooked health concerns among women. In a survey of more than four hundred women in the U.S. who had vaginal deliveries, nearly half reported some level of concern with vaginal laxity. Childbirth and other physical stress on the tissue, ageing, genetic pre-disposition, lifestyle, and certain medical conditions affect collagen levels in the skin and vaginal tissue, creating a feeling of looseness (laxity).

This weakening can not only result in decreased sensation and enjoyment with intercourse, but can also lead to incontinence or leaking of urine with movements such as jumping or skipping and actions such as laughing, coughing or sneezing. With time, this has a huge impact on women’s quality of life and may lead to lack of confidence, isolation and embarrassment.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy that includes exercises to tighten the muscles of the pelvic floor (Kegel exercises) have been the longstanding treatment of choice. However, these are often done incorrectly or inadequately, and while Kegels may improve muscle tone, they do not address the loss of elasticity in the soft tissue that rests upon the muscle and contributes to vaginal laxity.

Surgical options may be effective, but also may entail significant health risks, recovery time and post-procedure pain.

A new in-office, painless technology procedure delivers a measured amount of radio frequency to tissues underlying the skin of the vagina. This deep therapy activates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and stimulates remodelling of the vaginal tissue, resulting in a clinically proven decrease in incontinence and an improvement of the Female Sexual Function index.
