Our Process

Roughly 16% (or 1 in 6) couples in Canada experience infertility. This number has doubled since the 1980s. - www.healthycanadians.gc.ca

Many Canadians dream of having children of their own, but for some, the dream can seem just out of reach. If you and your partner are having trouble getting pregnant, there is hope.

At First Step Fertility, we understand how difficult this time can be for you and your family, and want to assure you that you never have to go through this process alone. Please contact us today if you are:

  • A woman under 35 and have been unable to conceive after 1 year of unprotected intercourse
  • A woman over 35 and have been unable to get pregnant after 6 months of unprotected intercourse (NB: As your chances of becoming pregnant at and after the age of 35 decrease by nearly 50%, wom0en 35 and over may choose to see a fertility specialist immediately)

If you have or have experienced the following reproductive health conditions:

  • Large fibroids or moderate/severe endometriosis
  • Ovulatory dysfunction, including irregular or absent periods, polycystic ovarion syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian insufficiency, or you've had ovarian surgery
  • Two or more miscarriages
  • Pelvic/genital infections, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Tubal ligation, tubal surgery, blocked tubes (one or both), or more than one ectopic

Although it may be commonly believed that infertility solely affects women, the reality is in 3 out of 10 cases the cause is related to the man. We can help if you have or are experiencing:

  • Abnormal semen analysis
  • Undescended testicles
  • A history of vasectomy or sexual dysfunction

Often, infertility is combination of factors affecting both the man and woman. You may need medical intervention if:

  • You've recently been diagnosed with cancer, or have undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatments
  • You have been diagnosed with HIV, Hepatitis B or C
  • You have been diagnosed with a genetic condition that may be passed on to your child

First Step Fertility offers assistance to single women interested in preserving their own fertility, single women or men interested in having their own biological child, and women or men in a same sex relationship interesting in having their own biological child.

When you are ready to start your family, don't leave it up to chance. The specialists at First Step Fertility are highly experienced medical professionals who will work hard to fulfill your dreams of having a baby.

Our Process

To get started with First Step Fertility, your gynaecologist will complete and forward a referral form to our office. Once we've processed your form, an appointment date and time will be made for your initial consultation, which will be sent to your physician.

During your initial consultation, your fertility specialist will discuss with you:

The results of any diagnostic tests your doctor may have forwarded on to us
Answer any questions and concerns you may have regarding our process
Arrange for additional testing as required.

Additional tests will be scheduled at the earliest available time. For most patients the process of completing the required tests and receiving results takes between four to six weeks.

Please remember to bring your (and your partner's) health card, and arrive at least 10 minutes early for your appointment to complete our patient health history forms, or download our New Patient form and bring a filled out copy along to your first appointment.

Medical evaluations and tests are used to uncover the reason behind your difficulties conceiving, and will help your specialist offer a prognosis for your future fertility. A battery of standard diagnostic tests may be requested for each patient or partner, if applicable.

Based on your evaluation, test results and treatment goals, your fertility specialist will create a personalized treatment plan for you and your partner, and during your follow up appointment you will have the opportunity to review the plan and provide feedback.

At First Step Fertility, our goal is to start your treatment cycle within days of receiving your final test results. Guiding you through an effective and efficient treatment process is our top priority.
