Naturopathic Medical consultations are covered by many extended health care benefit plans.
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of health care that investigates the root cause of disease or illness and promotes health and healing using natural therapies.
A Naturopathic Doctor uses comprehensive methods to investigate a patient's health thereby better understanding underlying chronic conditions that may have otherwise been missed. The root cause of health issues are then treated versus just treating symptoms.
After an initial consultation has been done to gather all relevant medical information, an individualized treatment plan is set forth for the patient that best suits their requirements. This ensures that every patient gets prescribed recommendations to support their individual struggles with infertility.
When being treated by a Naturopathic Doctor, evaluating a patient’s diet is part of the program and is important in treating fertility. A healthy balanced diet is always essential. You may be asked to fill out a Diet Diary in order to better understand what your diet looks like. Many women who have difficulty conceiving are actually consuming foods and drinks that might be slowing down the healthy functioning of the reproductive system
An individualized supplement program will be outlined to support any deficiencies that a patient may have. Studies have shown that taking certain supplements that include antioxidants and/or vitamins can help enhance fertility.
Acupuncture is the insertion of ultra-thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body to achieve therapeutic effect. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions.
Acupuncture helps by addressing problems that affect fertility. Every patient gets assessed to determine what acupuncture protocol would best support their fertility needs. Acupuncture helps to stimulate blood flow and oxygen to the reproductive organs, thereby helping enhance their function. Acupuncture also has a tremendous relaxation benefit which is so important for women undergoing fertility treatment.
Acupuncture can be very helpful for patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). It has been shown that incorporating acupuncture during an IVF cycle, and especially pre/post embryo transfer, can improve chances of success by up to 40%.
Ideally, it is recommended that you start acupuncture treatment at least one to two months before the commencement of the IVF cycle and that you continue for one to two times a week until the day of the transfer.
It is never too late to start acupuncture. While you are likely to obtain more cumulative benefits from the treatment by starting earlier, it would be still beneficial to receive even if you are in the middle of your IVF cycle.
On the actual day of the transfer, we usually suggest to our patients to have an acupuncture treatment for 25-30 minutes before the transfer and then have a subsequent treatment right after the transfer is complete.
Dr. Bergmann will come to the clinic to provide these treatments for you. These acupuncture treatments are also very relaxing for women during this very stressful time.
Dr. Bergmann can provide more information outlining the research and benefits of pre/post transfer acupuncture.
